Most workplace injuries are minor cuts, burns, or sprains, but a poorly stocked or disorganized first aid kit turns a five-minute fix into a bigger disruption, or worse, a delayed response to something serious. The strategies below help safety coordinators, office managers, and small business owners build a kit that matches the real hazards of their workplace, not just a generic checklist pulled off a shelf.

1. Start With the ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 Minimum Standard

Many employers assume OSHA spells out exactly what a first aid kit must contain. It doesn't. OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.151 only requires that employers have "adequate" first aid supplies available, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation and a lot of underfilled kits. The ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 standard, most recently updated in 2021, fills that gap by defining specific item lists and quantities based on workplace risk level, and it's worth checking for the current edition since the standard is periodically revised.

The standard splits kits into Class A, for workplaces with lower injury risk and frequency, and Class B, for environments where injuries are likely to be more severe or occur more often. A small office with fewer than 25 employees and minimal physical hazards typically fits a Class A kit. A manufacturing floor with machinery, sharp tools, or higher injury severity potential should step up to Class B, which includes larger quantities of core items.

2. Run a Hazard Assessment Before Stocking Supplies

A standard kit is a floor, not a ceiling. The specific injuries most likely to happen at your site should shape what you add beyond the baseline. A commercial kitchen deals with burns and grease splatter, so burn gel and eye wash deserve priority placement. A warehouse with pallet jacks, box cutters, and constant material handling sees more laceration and puncture wounds, which means more wound closure strips and bleeding control supplies relative to, say, burn treatment.

The data you need probably already exists. OSHA recordable injury logs, near-miss reports, and job hazard analyses reveal patterns most safety coordinators haven't fully mined for kit-planning purposes.

2. Add Trauma and Bleeding Control Supplies for High-Risk Environments

Standard first aid kits are built around minor injuries: cuts, scrapes, small burns. They're not designed for severe bleeding events, which is where a dedicated trauma or bleeding control kit comes in. This means a tourniquet, compressed hemostatic gauze, and pressure dressings, kept separate from the general kit so they're immediately identifiable in a high-stress moment.

Construction sites and facilities with heavy machinery are natural candidates for this. 4. Pair the Kit With an AED and BLS or CPR Training

A first aid kit, no matter how well stocked, cannot address sudden cardiac arrest. That requires an AED and someone trained to use it, along with CPR or BLS skills to bridge the gap before emergency responders arrive. Pairing these resources with your first aid kit location turns a supply cabinet into a genuine emergency response point.
